The Rising Threat of Measles in the USA: Overlooked Oral Impacts and the Role of Dental Professionals – A Perspective. (2026). CommonHealth, 7(1). https://doi.org/10.15367/e453n303

Abstract

Background: The reemergence of measles in the United States and the increasing number of cases of this airborne, infectious viral disease raise significant public health concerns. As of September 16, 2025, there have been a total of 1,491 confirmed cases of measles reported in the country. We highlight the important role of oral health professionals and their teams in mitigating against the further spread of this disease.

Methods: This perspective synthesizes current epidemiological data, oral health literature, and lessons from global vaccination strategies to examine measles-related oral manifestations and the potential contributions of oral health professionals in mitigating disease burden.

Results: To effectively contain or prevent these outbreaks, oral health professionals can play a vital role in early detection. This includes the prompt recognition of oral signs of measles, educating parents and guardians of the need for adequate vaccination. It is vital for dentists to accurately identify the signs and symptoms of measles, and refer affected children/individuals to the appropriate primary care provider.

Conclusion: Dentists and their team can be pivotal in measles control. This article reemphasizes the importance of multi-collaborative clinical and public health efforts towards the 2025 outbreak of measles in some US states.
