About the Journal

Visualities is a unique academic journal dedicated to bridging creative practice and theoretical discourse in contemporary art and design. Published by Temple University, the journal offers a platform where visual expression is treated as a rigorous form of scholarship.

The journal accepts submissions from artists, scholars, educators, designers, and practitioners; student submissions are not eligible for review.

Visualities places high-resolution images of original artworks and design projects at the center of each publication, with every piece paired with a conceptual description, offering a direct look into the creative process, methodology, and underlying philosophy driving the work. Through its rigorous double-blind peer-review process, the journal maintains the highest academic standards while championing practice-based research and elevating visual artifacts to the level of critical academic dialogue.

The journal features a diverse editorial board of global experts in art and design to ensure a multicultural perspective and uphold high standards of peer review for every submission. It is open access to ensure that these intersections of art and theory are accessible to artists, educators, and researchers across all borders without financial barriers.

By bridging the gap between creative practice and scholarly discourse, Visualities strives to provide a platform where visual expression is evaluated with the same intellectual weight as traditional academic research.
