Author Guidelines

The journal accepts submissions from artists, scholars, educators, designers, and practitioners; student submissions are not eligible for review.

Submissions must comprise 2 elements:

  1. One high resolution PDF including only the image of the artwork, design project, photograph, or film still, of exactly 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, in landscape format, in RGB color mode, on a white background if required, and with embedded fonts and vector elements where applicable.
  2. One DOC, TXT, or PDF file with the conceptual description of 300 to 500 words explaining the why and how behind the what, detailing the context, theoretical thinking, material process, and conceptual framework behind the visual work. 

All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of the journal. Those considered to be suitable will be sent for double-blind peer review before determining whether they can be accepted and published in the journal.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality, resolution, and color mode. Please proofread the text and correct any mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. If required, please, use the Chicago Manual of Style. When your submission meets the standards, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • References, if any, have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • The artwork has been given a title, included in the description.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish the visuals, if needed.

Visualities is committed to protecting the privacy and personal data of our contributors, peer reviewers, readers, and website visitors. This Privacy Statement explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website, submit manuscripts or visual artwork, or participate in our editorial processes.

1. Information

A. Personal Identification Data

  • Authors and Contributors: Name, academic or professional affiliation, email address, ORCID iD, mailing address, telephone number, and biographical details
  • Peer Reviewers and Editors: Name, institutional affiliation, email address, expertise keywords, and review history
  • Readers and Subscribers: Name, email address, and account credentials, if creating a user profile

B. Submissions and Media

  • Visuals and Conceptual Description: High-resolution visual artwork and text files submitted for consideration
  • Metadata and Copyright Information: Image captions, copyright ownership details, licensing disclosures, artist statements, and photo credits, if submitted

2. Peer Review Confidentiality

As an academic publication, Visualities treats all submitted manuscripts, artwork, and peer review reports as confidential documents.

  • Editorial staff will not disclose submitted works or reviewer identities to third parties outside the designated review process.
  • Peer reviewers agree to keep all submitted ideas, designs, and text strictly confidential and will not use unreleased research or artwork for their own benefit.

3. Image and Artwork Copyright Notice

  • Submitting authors retain moral rights and copyright over their original visual works, subject to the publishing agreement executed upon acceptance.
  • It is the author’s responsibility to secure third-party permissions for any copyrighted art, design, or photography included in their submission.
  • Visual assets published by the Journal are made available under the licensing terms specified on the publication page: Creative Commons CC BY-NC: Attribution-NonCommercial.

Note: Data that forms part of a published academic record, including author names and published papers, generally cannot be erased to protect scholarly integrity.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in Visualities website will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal.

The journal collects and processes personal information, such as name, affiliation, and contact details, solely to facilitate peer review, publishing services, and editorial communication.

Data is managed securely, will not be sold or rented, is shared only with trusted third-party providers necessary to operate the journal, and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

Authors retain full rights to access, update, or request the deletion of personal account data at any time by contacting the editorial team.
