Author Guidelines

Imhotep Graduate Student Journal April 2025 Issue – Victorious Consciousness: Emerging Scholarship in Contemporary Africology & Africana Studies 

Imhotep Graduate Student Journal is a peer-reviewed, open access journal managed by the graduate students of the Africology and African American Studies Department at Temple University. Imhotep Journal was first published in January 1989 as a platform to explore global African phenomena and to rediscover African epistemologies through intellectual discourse. Imhotep Journal publishes innovative research on the African/Black experience of interest to Africology and Africana Studies scholar-activists in academic and policy roles.

All articles in Imhotep Journal are published under a Creative Commons license. 

Submission Instructions 

Imhotep Journal accepts original research articles. Authors should ensure their submission’s compliance with the following items. Submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines. 

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration. 
  • Submission Due Date: On or before Friday, December 13, 2024. All manuscript files should be submitted via email to Chenelle N. Idehen, Editor-in-Chief, at chenelle.idehen@temple.edu. The file format should be .doc or .docx (i.e., Microsoft Word). Please do not submit .pdf, .jpeg, files, or other file formats that cannot be easily text edited. 
  • Each submission must include a manuscript and a separate title page with all author names and contact information. Please refer to the Submissions Checklist and Author Guidelines below. 

 Submissions Checklist 

  1. The manuscript should include: 
    • An abstract (max length: 500 words) on a separate page 
    • The title of the manuscript 
    • The main body 
    • References 
    • Figures and tables 
  2. A separate title page should be attached and should include:
    • The title of the article and the name of author(s), with degrees 
    • Author’s affiliation: academic department, institution, city, and state (or nation), telephone number, and e-mail address. 
  3. In a brief cover letter, please provide a statement certifying that the manuscript contains original work that has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere, a funding statement, any declarations of conflicts of interest, and proof of IRB approval, if applicable. 
  4. Include any supplementary materials.

Submission Instructions

Please ensure that your submission is polished and adheres to manuscript guidelines for original research articles. As part of the submission process you will need to confirm that this is your original work, that you have the rights in the work, that this is for first publication in the Imhotep Graduate Student Journal, that it is not being considered for/has not already been published elsewhere, and that you have obtained and can supply all necessary permissions for the reproduction of any copyright works not owned by you. 

Description: Original research articles should present novel work within the scope of Imhotep Journal which represents an important advancement in Africology and Africana Studies knowledge or understanding. Research articles need to include an introduction, a well-reported methodology, results, and a discussion of the results in the context of the published literature. You do not need to follow a template, but please ensure your heading levels are clear, and the sections are clearly defined. 

Length of Manuscript: 15-22 double-spaced pages with margins of at least 1 inch on all sides and a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman) of 12 points (no smaller). Manuscripts should be of sufficient length to ensure theoretical and methodological competence but concise enough to enhance readability. 

Minimum number of peer reviewers: 2. 

Title. The title of a manuscript should be accurate, explanatory, concise, and reflect the precise contents of the manuscript. 

Abstract: All manuscripts must include an abstract containing a maximum of 500 words typed on a separate page that concisely states the purpose of the research, methodology, major findings, and conclusions. 

Keywords: After the abstract, please include a minimum of five keywords. Keywords should be as specific as possible to the research topic. 

References: Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Chicago, APA, or MLA reference styles. Every in-text citation must have a corresponding citation in the reference list and vice versa.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
